Hymns for Solo Piano Sheet Music
Reverent, accessible piano arrangements of the hymns the church has been singing for centuries — written from the bench by composer and lifelong teacher Pam Asberry. Browse 35 hymn arrangements below as instant PDF downloads or printed songbook.
About these arrangements
Pam Asberry has spent more than thirty years teaching piano in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and her hymn arrangements come straight out of that studio. Each piece is written for a real pianist sitting at a real keyboard — not a concert virtuoso, but a serving church musician, a Sunday school teacher, a worship leader looking for a quiet prelude, or a contemplative listener who simply wants to sit with a familiar tune. The arrangements honour the original melody and harmony while adding a modern, gently impressionistic colour: open voicings, flowing left-hand patterns, and a careful sense of breath between phrases. They sound full without being showy.
These hymns work as preludes, postludes, offertories, and communion music in a Sunday service. They're equally at home played for personal devotion, a hospice room, a quiet dinner, or an Advent or Lenten meditation. Set Be Thou My Vision on the music desk for a centering moment before worship; bring out It Is Well with My Soul at the end of a difficult week; let Amazing Grace close a memorial. The settings are written to fit the moment they're needed in.
Most arrangements sit comfortably at an intermediate level — roughly equivalent to RCM 5–7 or late-intermediate ABRSM. A motivated adult returning to piano, a high-school student, or a working church pianist will find them very playable. There are no awkward stretches, no virtuosic figurations, and the page turns are designed around real reading. Pieces like Jesus Loves Me and Holy, Holy, Holy are slightly easier; A Mighty Fortress Is Our God and The Old Rugged Cross sit a little fuller and reward stronger hands. Every download includes the full score in a print-ready PDF.
You can buy these arrangements two ways. Each hymn is available as an instant PDF download for $5.50 — the file arrives in your inbox within minutes, prints cleanly on letter or A4, and is licensed for personal and studio use. The flagship collection is also available as a Amazing Grace Songbook — a professionally printed, perfect-bound volume that ships from Pam's studio in Georgia. The songbook is the format most church musicians prefer; the downloads are for when you need a piece tonight.
The collection runs from the great Reformation hymns (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Holy, Holy, Holy) through nineteenth-century gospel (What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Abide With Me) to Christmas carols, Easter resurrection hymns, and Thanksgiving songs of praise. Whether you need a single piece for a service this Sunday, the whole songbook for the year, or a year-round library of contemplative Christian piano music, the catalog below is browsable by season or by individual title.
Who these arrangements are for
The clearest fit is the working church pianist — someone leading a congregation, accompanying a choir, or covering a service when the regular accompanist is away. The arrangements give that pianist a reliable, beautiful version of every hymn they're already going to play, written by someone who has sat in the same bench. Adult learners returning to piano after a long pause have used these as their re-entry repertoire — familiar tunes that sound far more accomplished than they are to play. Worship teams use them for instrumental moments inside a contemporary service. Hospice musicians and chaplains play them at bedsides. Music teachers assign them to intermediate students who are ready for a real piece but still building reading endurance. And many copies of the songbook simply sit on a piano at home, opened on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
What's in each arrangement
Every PDF is a complete arrangement — not a lead sheet, not a chord chart. The full piano score is engraved cleanly with sensible page turns, marked dynamics and pedaling, and an introduction and ending that frame the hymn rather than dropping you in cold. Tempos are suggestions; the arrangements are written to breathe and can be slowed down for a meditative moment or kept moving for a processional. Original keys are preserved where they support congregational singing; in a few cases Pam transposes to a key that lays better under the hand while still being singable. Each piece runs roughly 2–4 minutes — the length most church services have for a prelude, offertory, or communion meditation.
